Let’s imagine today that you are in a little wooden boat, floating through the great waters of the ocean. On the horizon, dark clouds build and advance across the sky, until you are shrouded in darkness. Rain begins to pour down upon you and the seas rise up wildly around you. Water throws your boat through the air. Water fills your boat to the point of sinking. Water whips against your boat, threatening to tear it apart.
These images of the great ocean tempest are a figurative picture of the storms of our lives. Here we find ourselves, floating along in our own little world only to be slowly crept up on or sometimes rapidly overtaken by stormy circumstances and situations. That threat of layoffs finally becomes real. The annual physical uncovers problems you didn’t know existed. You and your husband can’t seem to stop fighting. Storms, storms, storms… beating down upon you.
The storms are loud and they are powerful. They threaten to drown out all of the goodness of life and consume our thoughts and hearts with fear, anger, and feelings of hopelessness. They wail against us, sapping our strength and leaving us feeling shaken and fragile. I can’t take another day of this, is our desperate prayer for relief.
But the bible is very clear that although we can expect storms in this life, the roar of God’s goodness is louder than the roar of your storm AND the strength of God’s hand is more powerful than the strength of your storm.
Psalm 93 (NIV)
1 The Lord reigns, he is robed in majesty;
the Lord is robed in majesty and armed with strength;
indeed, the world is established, firm and secure.
2 Your throne was established long ago;
you are from all eternity.
3 The seas have lifted up, Lord,
the seas have lifted up their voice;
the seas have lifted up their pounding waves.
4 Mightier than the thunder of the great waters,
mightier than the breakers of the sea—
the Lord on high is mighty.
5 Your statutes, Lord, stand firm;
holiness adorns your house
for endless days.
Simply put, He is and always will be Louder and Stronger still. If I’m truly honest, sometimes I look at the difficulty of a particular circumstance and ultimately have very little faith in God’s ability to turn things around. A parking spot near the door, sure God could do that…but fix this terribly broken and seemingly irreparably damaged relationship…not sure what God could do there. But the truth of God’s word says that there is absolutely nothing on earth, including even our most complex, confusing, broken, and heartbreaking challenges, that is stronger than He is. There is not a single storm that you have faced, are facing, or will ever face that is greater in its power than He is. There is no storm so loud that He cannot shout over it, or whisper through it to your heart. And that is mind-blowing. In His perfect timing, and His perfect way, He can and will overcome the storms of your life if you let Him. Know that He is good, that He loves you unfailingly, and as you hear the storms of life howling all around you – trust that He is Louder and Stronger still.
